More cat stuff and other stuff.

It seems like having two new cats around the house seriously interferes with one's blogging time. Partly this is due to the fact that I am again having to deal with The Litter Tray. Our old cat didn't use a litter tray - she was an outdoor girl and used a quiet corner of the garden. The new arrivals still prefer the fun of throwing gravel around my kitchen.

I don't know why, but the cats seem to consider watching me cleaning out their lavatorial facility to be the highest form of entertainment. I have only to start work with the scoop and both kitties appear as if by magic to watch. And to get in the way. And sometimes to climb into the tray for a REALLY GOOD LOOK while I am trying to remove.......stuff. Despite the fact that they produced said stuff themselves, it seems that everything must be thoroughly examined and approved before removal.

And then the clean litter tray, raked to the perfect, pristine precision of a Japanese Zen garden, must be christened. Immediately. Ideally before I have even managed to get the bag of litter back into the garage. The sooner we can persuade them that the great outdoors is a better location for such activities, the better.

  1. If I weren't allergic to cats, this post would have re-convinced me to never own any.

  2. That's another reason we don't have pets.

  3. It must be a cat thing. Ours do the same thing, as if a clean tray is an invitation for a big crap, whether needed or not.

  4. No no no, first two commenters. The joy far supersedes the pain. Just like babies. And unlike babies, they don't grow up and start going out with actors.... (personal little gripe here...)

  5. I don't think supersedes is what I mean. What do I mean? I mean, is more than. I'm sure there's a word. You wouldn't think I was an English teacher, would you? That's what being 59 is like. Words go.

  6. Theodore christens his litter box immediately upon cleaning too. In fact, sometimes he will STRAIN SO FKING HARD NEEERUGH! just to do it straight away. One of these days he's going to give himself a prolapse, the stupid fat mess.

You can get litter trays with covers. They work ok. I've got a litter tray with a cover that I've put into a wooden storage chest (from Argos) that I put a pet door in. So the cat goes in two doors to use his box. It keeps things smelling fresher and it keeps the dog from pilfering turds to munch on.

FML for having to deal with this stuff. For serious!

  7. Yes, I think it's universal. A clean litterbox is a cat laxative. Max supervises anxiously, then hops in to make a deposit of some type.

  8. How about "outweighs", Isabelle?? I got my cat the Buddha Dome. It's less unsightly and gives the poor guy some privacy while attending to business. Then I got this amazing corn husk cat litter which still clumps and absorbs odors like clay cat litter, but which I can scoop and flush down the toilet. And I only need to change it about every 2 months or so. Fascinating, isn't it?

  9. If they go outside you could always remove the litter tray (cold turkey - otherwise they will use both the outside and the litter tray) t(and try hard to avoid the evil eye when there is 8 inches of snow on the ground and they have to get cold feet.....

  10. Time to get the camera out, we need to see pictures of these bundles of fuzzy poop producers....preferably not playing in the "Japanese Zen garden".

It's been 12 years since our last kitten which is good news hope it will be another 4 or 5 before we get another one....

  11. Eeeuuuuw. You need to get those cats outdoors! As quickly as possible! When we had cats years ago, when they were kittens they started off with a washing-up bowl full of earth in the kitchen, then asap they'd be outside. Maybe they prefer cat litter to raw earth? Ours were always quite keen to get outside and do their business thankfully!
